Mercedes was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in the Minor League phase of last year’s December Rule 5 draft. Before that, Mercedes had quite an interesting history.
At 18, the Dominican Republic native from La Romana (home of Edwin Encarnacion and Antonio Alfonseca, among others) signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals, in March 2011.
