Early 20th Century baseball coverage was undeniably colorful, and never more so than on this day in the Chicago Tribune. Covering another no-hit, improbably win for the White Sox, the paper dubbed the club the “Hitless Wonders.” Rarely has a moniker so stuck with a team.
Now, if the White Sox had remained a middling club (after a 3-1 win over the New York Highlanders courtesy of seven singles, the White Sox improved to 43-33 but still in fourth place, three games out), this little bit of color would be lost to history. But this offensively-challenged club would win 50 of 65 games to finish out the season, then upset the heavily-favored crosstown Cubs in the World Series.
