Ryan LaMarre thought he had the kind of story that only happens in campy sports movies like “Rookie of the Year.”
LaMarre, who grew up about 70 miles from Detroit, hit his first major-league home run at Comerica Park — and it supposedly was caught by an uncle, one of many relatives who were in the stands.
After the game, the White Sox outfielder was elated to share the odds-defying twist to his baseball milestone, and the fairy-tale story went viral, appearing in USA Today, the Detroit Free Press and the Tribune, among others.
