Ron Gardenhire is the latest candidate to meet with the Detroit Tigers regarding the team’s managerial vacancy. Gardenhire, currently the Arizona Diamondbacks’ bench coach, is interviewing with the Tigers Tuesday, a source confirmed to The Athletic.
The news was first reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Gardenhire, 59, is believed to be one of the handful of candidates on the Tigers’ shortlist, with Detroit leaning toward someone with previous MLB managerial experience. Gardenhire would certainly fulfill that requirement, with 13 years of experience managing the Minnesota Twins (2002-14).
Other candidates that have recently interviewed with the Tigers include Colorado Rockies’ bench coach Mike Redmond, Miami Marlins third base coach Fredi Gonzalez, Chicago White Sox bench coach Joe McEwing and San Francisco Giants hitting coach Hensley Meulens.
