With revenue losses expected in wake of a shortened season, one potentially without fans in attendance due to COVID-19, Major League Baseball umpires have agreed to a substantial pay cut for the 2020 season.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the 76 umpires will take about a 30 percent cut this season. They were scheduled to make about $37.6 million collectively, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, meaning the cut is worth about $11.28 million.
The deal also includes a 20 percent cut on the umpire's road trip per diems, per Nightengale, though the league hopes to circumvent that by booking hotels at cheaper rates.
