About 25 years ago, I experienced an unforgettable moment in time. I met former White Sox slugging third baseman Pete Ward — my favorite player during my high school days in Gary, IN — in the most unlikely of circumstances.
Happily, the story didn’t end with that chance meeting. In the years to follow, we’ve gotten together many times and, on occasion, with our wives. Last week my wife Bonnie and I flew to the Portland, OR area where Ward, 81, grew up and still lives, and spent five days with Pete and Margaret, his extraordinary wife of 55 years.
