On the enduring friendship of Joe Thomas and Doug Dieken and a day of pain for two Browns left tackles

Jim Donovan described the scene at Browns’ training camp this summer like he was calling a play on the Browns radio network.

His broadcast partner, Doug Dieken, had his first grandchild, Sean, with him at the Berea facility and the Browns former left tackle was trying to catch the attention of the Browns current left tackle Joe Thomas after practice.

“Doug turns the corner like he’s leading a power sweep,” Donovan told The Athletic. “I mean Diek is moving. He wanted Joe to meet his grandson.”

The toddler wore a brown No. 73 jersey — the number belonging to Thomas and grandpa.
