GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Major League Baseball announced the hire of White Sox staffer Del Matthews to oversee day-to-day operations of its Urban Youth Academies program.
The team’s assistant director of player development, Matthews has worked in the White Sox front office since 2007. Matthews, the son of former major leaguer Gary Matthews and brother of Gary Matthews Jr., has worked both jobs for several weeks, including running the team’s minor league camp. He’ll stay with the White Sox in the interim until he transitions into his new role in New York. But the former Milwaukee Brewers farmhand said the chance to return to MLB was too good to pass up.
