The lazy notion that a World Series championship would change things forever for the Cubs was dispelled almost immediately, thanks to Joe Maddon's curious managing decisions in the final three games of the World Series, all of which the Cubs won. Particularly Game 7, which again, the Cubs won in 10 innings.
Perpetual longing, the crippling anxiety, the disdain for the manager. These are forever traits of sports fans, not exactly unique to those who pay homage to Wrigley Field.
So that’s why I enjoyed the constant criticism that followed Maddon after winning the World Series.
But unlike, say, former Cubs manager Dusty Baker, who caught a small slice of hell after 2003's NLCS and watched it snowball in 2004's late September disaster, Maddon has mostly brushed off the critiques and moved on.
