The Athletic spoke to Carson Fulmer Tuesday night, fresh off six innings of one-run ball against a Pawtucket lineup featuring rehabbing major leaguers Jackie Bradley Jr. and Josh Rutledge, prospects Sam Travis and Blake Swihart, and former big leaguers Rusney Castillo and Junior Lake.
After a rough first inning, Fulmer settled in and kept the ball on the ground for one of his best starts of the opening few weeks. While he’s not generating the huge strikeout numbers typically associated with an eighth overall draft pick, he spoke about how he’s expanding his arsenal to get more quick, weak contact outs, and the progress he’s had refining his command and control.
