Jerry Sands makes most of first start, homers in White Sox win

MINNEAPOLIS — Sunday’s postponement had Jerry Sands unsure if he’d get another start any time soon.

The White Sox designated hitter could see his name in the lineup again shortly if he can replicate Wednesday night’s performance after he finally got his chance.

Given an opportunity to play because Avisail Garcia has struggled against Phil Hughes, Sands delivered a big two-run home run late in a 3-0 White Sox victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field. The seventh-inning homer by Sands — who was supposed to start Sunday’s rained out game after Adam Eaton’s wife gave birth to their first child — off Hughes gave the White Sox a nice cushion as they improved to 6-2, their best start since 2012.
