Jason Benetti and Adam Amin on the obstacles of calling games — from empty ballparks, apartments and studios — during COVID-19

Jason Benetti idly dropped his notes during a break in Marshall’s football rout of Eastern Kentucky, and neither viewers nor anyone at ESPN knew how close that came to spelling TV disaster.

What Benetti didn’t reveal until after the game was the pile of papers he had printed that morning at his neighborhood FedEx store knocked loose a computer cord, severing his audio hookup.

“I jiggled the cord and … about 20 or 30 seconds before we came back on the air, I was back,” Benetti recalled of the September 2020 game. “Thank goodness.”

Such has been the exciting world of broadcasting remotely from a Chicago apartment, as necessitated by the health protocols for COVID-19.
