James Shields (5-14, 4.39 ERA) takes on Tigers left-hander Matthew Boyd (7-11, 4.27) Thursday to lead off the White Sox’s four-game series at Comerica Park.
Shields is coming off his first win — against the Royals Friday — since also beating the Royals on July 13.
“His record doesn’t show but he’s been outstanding throughout the year. He’s put us in position to win every single time he goes out there,” White Sox interim manager Joe McEwing said. “He revamped himself, reinvented himself, he’s keeping us in ballgames and giving us longer stretches where we don’t have to go to the bullpen right away, eating up innings and giving us an opportunity to win.
