In his 33rd year in the White Sox broadcast booth, and after multiple promises to call games until he died in that booth, Hawk Harrelson finally admitted Wednesday that he was bluffing.
The White Sox announced that 2018 will be Harrelson’s final year serving as their play-by-play man, and an abbreviated one at that. He will be limited to 20 games while the full-time broadcast responsibilities transition to Jason Benetti, who agreed to a multi-year deal that was also announced on Wednesday. The 20 games will be primarily home Sundays and other day games as a sort of goodbye tour to the franchise’s most unique personality, and also to spare drivers on the Indiana Toll Road from the wrath of Hawk’s ornery late-night drives back to Granger, Indiana.
