Mike Rhoades was walking out of the pressroom on March 20, his season over after Rice lost in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational, and he spied his wife, Jodie, in the distance.
She was crying.
At the time, Rhoades was caught in the end-of-seasonspin cycle known as the coaching carousel. Multiple schools had contacted him about job openings, and he had whittled his list to two. Both expected an answer the next day. Rhoades figured Jodie was sad to see their tenure at Rice possibly end and was worried about their next move. He quickly tried to reassure her, reminding her that though the next 24 hours might be a little hectic, their future was bright.
