White Sox DH Edwin Encarnación showed some evasiveness in a strange play during Saturday's Crosstown Classic game at Wrigley Field.
Encarnación grounded to Cubs shortstop Javier Báez, who made an uncharacteristic off-line throw to first base. Anthony Rizzo reached in front of the bag in foul territory to catch the throw, snapping a tag on Encarnación.
Encarnación's momentum took him towards the fair side of first, and as he passed the bag, first base umpire Laz Díaz tripped over his own feet. In a split-second move, Encarnación managed to hurtle Díaz, avoiding a potentially nasty collision.
