As a player, John Smoltz was a great pitcher and a good interview.
As an analyst, Smoltz is a bore, as the 14-inning game between the Cubs and Mets revealed. He didn’t seem to like the product on the field, and sounded like he couldn’t wait for the game to end. By the end he was droning on about a desire to have more “patience,” suggesting he was impatient with the lack of offense and the length of the game.
Having not watched the entire game, I wasn’t able to hear everything Smoltz said. But from what I remember, Smoltz doesn’t like strict pitch counts, analytics or extra-inning games, and thinks the Yankees shouldn’t have been able to re-sign Aroldis Chapman for at least a year after trading him to the Cubs for Gleyber Torres.
