Column: As Gov. Pritzker chides MLB players for ‘holding out for ... high salaries,’ baseball risks a black eye if owners and the union can’t reach a deal

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker weighed in Tuesday on Major League Baseball’s plan during his daily coronavirus update, criticizing players for “holding out” for more money while other Americans are “sacrificing” during the pandemic.

Team owners on Monday approved MLB’s plan for an 82-game schedule beginning in early July and offered players a 50-50 split of revenues for what amounts to about one-half of a regular season. Players union executive director Tony Clark responded to the proposal by telling The Athletic that MLB was “trying to take advantage of a global health crisis” to institute a salary cap.
