Tony La Russa would joke with Dave Duncan for years that if the pitching coach wanted to come back to the dugout, he’d come back, too.
The two were together for a portion of La Russa’s time as manager of the Chicago White Sox, and for the entirety of his stints with the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals.
Completing the coaching staff will be one of La Russa’s early steps. At the moment, pitching coach is the one known open position as the Sox parted ways with longtime pitching coach Don Cooper on Oct. 12.
