The Sox addressed both areas in separate deals Thursday and put themselves in a better position for the stretch run and October.
“I think César fits our needs real well,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said after Thursday’s 5-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. “He’s having a good year and love what he can do from both sides of the plate. He’s got good athleticism.
“And Tepera, he’s got experience, he can fill out different roles. Depth is always good in the bullpen. And I think César will really help us.”
In Hernández, the Sox get an infielder with pop to fill in for injured second baseman Nick Madrigal.
