Baseball cliches, doubleheaders and the selling of the seventh inning stretch

On Friday, Sox starter Chris Sale declined to talk about his attempt to enter the Royals clubhouse after Thursday’s brawl.

"I mean, there's really nothing to talk about,” he said. “It is what it is.”

Two days later, Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain was asked about his two-game suspension for his role in the brawl.

"It is what it is," Cain replied.

The two responses beg the question: “What exactly is it?”

The cliché "It is what it is" is so over-used you can almost envision the teams teaching players to say it in unison during the ubiquitous spring training meetings about how to deal with the media.
