GLENDALE, Ariz. — Cory Luebke told Rick Renteria he'd make every effort to report to camp on time earlier this week.
It's a good guess the White Sox manager couldn't imagine to what levels Luebke would go to keep his promise.
Shortly after his wife was released from the hospital late Sunday night following the birth of the couple's first child, Luebke — a non-roster invitee to camp this spring — and his father put the pitcher's two dogs in the family truck and drove straight from Nashville, Tenn., to Phoenix. Leaving at 3 a.m. on Monday morning, the two men alternated between driving and sleeping for 24 consecutive hours, only stopping for gas and restroom breaks, in order to reach Phoenix in time for Luebke to report to camp and take his physical on Tuesday morning.
