New assistant hitting coach Greg Sparks has a history with the White Sox that goes beyond his previous working relationship with hitting coach Todd Steverson in Oakland.
Sparks first got to know the Sox when his father, Joe, was the first-base coach and he was a batboy during the 1979 season, which included one particularly interesting night on the job at old Comiskey Park.
Sparks was in the dugout setting up for the second game of a doubleheader when the chaotic events of Disco Demolition Night began to unfold. The Sox’s promotion to blow up disco records in the outfield quickly devolved when fans stormed the field.
