Vaughn, the team’s top prospect, led off the second with a walk and later scored on an infield hit from Jake Burger. Vaughn singled to left in the fourth and to right in the sixth before flying out to center in the eighth.
Vaughn is competing for a roster spot and is in the mix for the open designated-hitter slot. He’s 7-for-20 (.350) this spring.
Sox manager Tony La Russa wasn’t quite ready to announce the opening-day starter. But Lucas Giolito gave another performance worthy of that role Friday against the Rangers.
“My pregame bullpen was horrible, but just goes to show that doesn’t really dictate how the game’s going to go,” Giolito said in a conference call Friday.
