With the 14th pick of the MLB Draft, the Chicago Cubs selected third baseman Cam Smith of Florida State. Smith is a big, sturdy power hitting third baseman who excelled with the Seminoles last season.
Smith, 21, is a sophomore-eligible draft pick. Last year with the Seminoles, Smith hit .387/.488/.654 with 16 home runs in 66 games. He also walked 44 times in 269 at-bats, as compared to his 48 strikeouts. Add in his nine hit-by-pitches, and Smith did collect more free bases than he struck out.
The first thing you notice about Smith is that he’s a big man listed at 6’3”, 215 lbs, although most observers think he weighs 10-15 pounds more than that.
