PITTSBURGH -- In Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon’s laid-back, show-up-when-you-want clubhouse, there’s still one player who prefers the old-school way of doing things.
Lefty relief pitcher Travis Wood is nearly always first to the ballpark, with his teammates often showing up hours later. That’s not an exaggeration. Wood often arrives at 1 p.m. for a night game when team buses on the road aren’t there until 4 or 5 o'clock.
“Back in Double-A, if I wanted to hit with the hitting coach, I had to get there before everyone,” Wood explained early Monday afternoon.
