Why teach an old dog new tricks when his old tricks are working just fine?
At 42, Koji Uehara is the oldest player in the Cubs clubhouse — two years older, in fact, than Dancing With The Stars finalist David Ross — and also, at least recently, one of the best pitchers on the staff, riding the devastating split-finger that made him a household name in Boston four years ago to strong results so far in 2017.
Uehara’s deceptively simple game plan was on full display Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field, in which he was called upon to close out a 9-5 game in the ninth against the Cincinnati Reds.
