The week in interesting and unusual MLB stats (April 11 - 17)

Each Sunday throughout the baseball season, we present our favorite quirks, oddities, and first-time-since events from the past week. Today we begin writing the "Story" of the 2016 campaign.

You probably heard about not one, but two dominant pitching performances Thursday. Just 40 minutes after Vince Velasquez struck out 16 Nationals (more here), Jaime Garcia finished off a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts. That's an afternoon that hasn't been seen in a dozen years; the last time two pitchers posted Game Scores of at least 97 on the same day was May 18, 2004, when Jason Schmidt's one-hitter for the Giants against the Cubs was overshadowed by Randy Johnson's perfect game for the Diamondbacks against the Braves.
