Surprise, surprise: The road to the America East title goes through Vermont

By Ken Davis

Time for a little word association. Someone mentions Vermont, our 14th state. What comes to mind? New England. The Green Mountains. Fall foliage. Witch windows. Ben & Jerry’s.

College basketball? Well, yes, that too. The Vermont Catamounts have finished third or better in the America East Conference in each of the past nine years. Only six other programs can make that claim in their conferences: Belmont, BYU, Gonzaga, Kansas, New Mexico State and Princeton. And the Catamounts are the team to beat again in the America East this season.

Top tier

Vermont The Catamounts won a school-record 29 games and were 16-0 in the America East last season.
