With last week’s trade of Eloy Jimenez, the Cubs have once again chosen to protect their major-league roster at the expense of their prospect depth. In the last year, the Cubs have dealt away Jimenez, Gleyber Torres and Dylan Cease to bolster their pitching staff, rather than move anyone currently playing in Wrigley Field. It’s hard to argue with the results; the Cubs won a World Series with Aroldis Chapman and are undefeated in the Jose Quintana era. However, by choosing to keep the MLB team intact, the Cubs have maintained a roster crunch that makes it a challenge to get all their young players into the lineup.
