On Monday, with no preamble, the Yankees announced that their long-time radio play-by-play announcer John Sterling was calling it a career, and his last game in the booth was behind him. The 85-year-old called 5,420 regular season games over his long career. Sterling cited the strain of road games, and recent fatigue as his primary reasons for announcing his retirement.
His long-time radio partner Suzyn Waldman was candid and emotional in her response to the news. “Life goes on, and we all go on, but nothing will ever be the same,” she said.
Here is the statement from the Yankees:
The New York Yankees today announced that legendary Yankees play-by-play radio voice John Sterling, who has called 5,420 regular season Yankees games and 211 postseason Yankees games, is retiring effective immediately.
