Going in to the All-Star break, despite the warts that are pretty visible with this year’s edition of the Chicago Cubs, a Cub fan had to feel pretty good–best record in the National League, a few games up on the Brewers, Cards firing Mike Matheny…all in all, not too bad.
What has followed has been a…I’m not sure WHAT to call it. The series against the Cardinals–a 5-gamer, owing to the two teams getting the ‘privilege’ of a shortened All-Star break to be the only game that night, plus a doubleheader because of a rainout earlier this year–was a lot harder than it needed to be with that team hobbling along with an interim manager and an apparent aversion to playing defense.
