No ordinary Joe? Cubs hope new reliever Smith is deadline hero

The Cubs quietly closed out their trade deadline, as sources tell The Athletic they’ve once again reinforced their bullpen by acquiring right-handed reliever Joe Smith from the Los Angeles Angels for minor-league pitcher Jesus Castillo. The Cubs designated Sunday’s starter Brian Matusz for assignment to make room for Smith on the roster. The team has not confirmed either move. The Cubs also recalled reliever Spencer Patton.

In his third season with the Angels, Smith posted a 3.82 ERA, just below his career-worst mark of 3.83 in 2010. In 37 2/3 innings, Smith has surrendered 16 earned runs, 36 hits, four home runs, has an 8.
