No joy in Wrigleyville: Soler strikes out, Cubs swept in doubleheader

Another game, another struggling outfielder coming to the plate in a key situation.

After Jason Heyward failed to deliver in a big plate appearance late in the front end of a doubleheader Wednesday — a 7-4 loss to San Diego that ended the Cubs’ winning streak at eight games — the scuffling Jorge Soler had a chance to be the hero in the nightcap.

With the Cubs trailing in the bottom of the eighth, Soler strolled to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. The Padres had already gifted Chicago with a second life after shortstop Alexei Ramirez dropped a Kris Bryant pop-up that put two men on for Anthony Rizzo.
