After the Chicago Cubs made the decision to move Travis Wood to the bullpen was made, the writing was on the wall for one of the left-handers in the pen. Turns out that was Phil Coke. Have four lefties in the pen wasn’t a viable option, even with Zac Rosscup and Wood not being traditional “specialist”. So Coke was designated for assignment on Monday after posting mediocre numbers in his time with the Cubs. If the veteran clears waivers, he could be assigned to Iowa, but will have the choice of declining the assignment if he so chooses.
