Many baseball fans have been clamoring for a fully automated ball-and-strike call system in MLB.
And such a system has been tried out in the minor leagues, alongside a “challenge” system, where teams start with three ball/strike challenges and can have more if they keep challenging correctly.
Per this article by Jayson Stark in The Athletic, Triple-A leagues are soon to drop the automated system, which was being used three days a week, and go to the challenge system full-time:
When an electronic ball-strike system arrives in the big leagues at some point in the next few years, it won’t be used to call every pitch.
