All throughout spring training, when asked about his role with the team, Mike Montgomery said all the right things. For most of the offseason, it seemed as though he would be the Cubs' fifth starter. But a flurry of moves in the month leading up to spring training suddenly pushed him into the bullpen and behind Eddie Butler for first man up in case of an injury. Montgomery admitted that he wanted to be a starter, but if he didn’t win that spot, he’d be happy to fill any role the defending World Champion Cubs asked of him.
But after injuries to Brett Anderson and Kyle Hendricks, Montgomery has finally gotten his opportunity.
