When the Cubs’ husky boy leadoff hitter Anthony Rizzo slid into San Diego catcher Austin Hedges at home plate in the sixth inning Monday night, it sent Hedges backward.
I looked at my pressbox neighbor with eyebrows raised. We just don’t see that kind of play anymore. Hedges held onto the ball and Rizzo was out at the plate. A leadoff triple wasted and a one-run Cubs deficit loomed large.
