Kawakami: Dave Righetti is out as Giants pitching coach, and that raises some key questions

No coach lasts forever. Sports are just not set up for coach-as-long-as-you-want tenures — even Vince Lombardi left the Packers, right?

And assistant coaches, especially, are often disposable, temporary and forever vulnerable to the latest management whim or necessary changeup.

But if any coach could last just about forever, I thought it might be self-effacing, droll, passionate, smart, detail-driven, loyal-loyal-loyal Dave Righetti with the Giants.

And Righetti lasted 18 seasons with the Giants — starting with Dusty Baker and some good times, staying with Felipe Alou through some largely non-good times, then sticking with Bruce Bochy for the rough start of that era, then serving as a key part of those 2010, 2012 and 2014 World Series championships.
