Lost in Kyle Hendricks’ near no-hitter on Monday night was the odd ejection of Joe Maddon. After Hendricks lost his no-no to start the ninth inning, catcher Miguel Montero immediately went to the mound to talk to his pitcher.
He walked back to the plate, but as he got in his crouch, home plate umpire Joe West tapped Montero on the shoulder and pointed to the mound, where the entire infield was gathering to speak to Hendricks, as if to suggest Montero should join his teammates.
“So I’m walking out and he said, ‘If you go out there, I’m gonna count it as a visit,’” Montero said.
