Joe Maddon has a history of taking an outside-the-box approach in regards to how he manages each game.
One of those unorthodox methods through 95 games as the manager of the Cubs is employing a closer-by-committee for the ninth inning, similar to the way he approached late innings when the took the Tampa Bay Rays to the World Series in 2008.
The Rays didn't have an established closer on their roster after Troy Percival went down with an injury late in the season so Maddon used the likes of Dan Wheeler, Grant Balfour, J.P. Howell and even current Cub Jason Hammel to get the final three outs.
