Jed Hoyer says the 2024 Cubs are likely to be over the Competitive Balance Tax

Reasonable people can and do disagree about the Jed Hoyer era on the North Side of Chicago. After all, the beloved World Series heroes he traded away during the 2021 trade deadline have generally struggled since leaving the Cubs and the farm system is substantially better than the one he started with when he was promoted from General Manager to President of Baseball Operations. On the other hand, two players from the beloved World Series team that the Cubs moved on have really thrived outside Chicago. Both Kyle Schwarber and Willson Contreras have continued to excel with new teams — and they are the the two players Hoyer and company got the least return for, non-tendering Schwarber and settling for a competitive balance pick for Contreras after failing to trade him at the 2022 deadline.
