Javier Baez diagnosed with hairline fracture in thumb, could miss rest of season

Cubs shortstop Javier Baez suffered a hairline fracture in his thumb when he slid headfirst into second base during a loss to the Brewers last Sunday. An MRI on Saturday revealed the extent of the injury, which could spell the premature end of the All-Star’s season.

Baez, in the middle of another strong campaign, hasn’t played since he injured his hand sliding into second base nearly a week ago.

The Cubs won’t offer an estimate on Baez’s timeline to return to the field until he sees a specialist Monday. However, a hairline fracture to his thumb would likely prevent him from playing again this season.
