Cubs pitcher Javier Assad entered spring training battling pitchers Jordan Wicks, Drew Smyly and Hayden Wesneski for the final two rotation spots.
Now, after another impressive start — throwing six scoreless innings to help the Cubs get a 5-0 series-clinching win over the Brewers — it’s hard to envision Assad not in the rotation. He’s taken advantage of his opportunities to stake his claim that he should remain in the rotation, even when the staff is fully healthy.
Sunday’s performance was his third career start pitching at least six scoreless innings.
“We have a great defense and it definitely gives you confidence going out there,” Assad said through an interpreter.
