Winning often masks flaws, but even one loss can bring out the naysayers. After the Cubs’ 7-4 loss in the opener of the Wednesday’s double-header against the San Diego Padres, the blame could easily be spread around.
Javier Baez made a pair of critical errors at third base that lead to multiple runs, though manager Joe Maddon was unconcerned this would be a lingering issue.
“I think he’s one of the best infield defenders in the National League,” Maddon said. “It just happens to everybody, he’s really good.”
Baez has earned the benefit of the doubt after the defensive show he’s put on the last few weeks.
