The prospect of a 2018 National League All-Star squad without Jon Lester on it just doesn’t seem right.
At 34 — in both age and jersey number — Lester has been one of the NL’s finest pitchers this season, his ERA dropping to 2.22 after seven shutout innings in Saturday’s win at Wrigley Field, a mark that ranks third in the Senior Circuit behind only Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer.
In a season dominated by cries of “what’s wrong with Yu Darvish?” — and, to a lesser extent, “what’s wrong with Jose Quintana?” — Lester has been the picture of consistency.
