Former Cubs manager and GM Jim Frey dies at 88

Former Cubs manager Jim Frey died at the age of 88.

Frey, who served as manager from 1984-86, led the Cubs to a division title in 1984. He became the team’s general manager in 1987 and stayed in that job until 1991. The Cubs returned to the NLCS in in 1989 with Frey as GM and Don Zimmer as manager.

The Cubs lost to the San Diego Padres in 1984 and the San Francisco Giants in 1989.

Before joining the Cubs, Frey managed the Kansas City Royals from 1980-81, and took the Royals to the 1980 World Series.
