Harry Caray had a knack for selling the fan experience at Wrigley Field. The man’s coverage of day baseball in one of baseball’s most revered cathedrals is one of the many contributing factors to my life-long love affair with the Chicago Cubs. He had a way of making you feel like you were as close to the ballpark as possible tuning in on WGN, and frequently would lament that you, the viewer, were not out there with those fans right at that moment.
Today as I walked around the old ballpark at the corner of Clark and Addison while I was thinking about this piece, tonight’s baseball bingo card and the Ryne Sandberg statue dedication festivities that I’ll be covering today for a piece tomorrow, I felt that yearning in my soul for all of you.
