Hanging out in his downtown Chicago hotel room Thursday evening, Dexter Fowler heard some loud noises.
“I was like, it’s a little early for fireworks,” he said Friday morning at Wrigley Field.
It was then that he started to connect the dots, recalling that former Cubs teammate Anthony Rizzo had told him he planned to propose to his girlfriend, Emily Vakos.
Still, Fowler sent Rizzo a text: “No way those fireworks were for you.”
Rizzo’s response: “You know it.”
And so the news of Rizzo’s engagement nearly overshadowed that of Fowler’s return to Wrigley Field — though if that were really in question, Fowler’s solo shot off John Lackey to lead off the game provided a pretty definitive answer.
