ST. LOUIS – By Sunday morning, Joe Maddon expects to be a lame-duck manager no more.
Whether he’ll be the Cubs manager beyond Sunday is another matter.
But he and team president Theo Epstein planned to meet Saturday night about whether Maddon will back for a sixth year managing, with an announcement expected Sunday.
Asked if the meeting might involve cocktails, Maddon said, “Probably, yeah. Not that I need any more of those, man. I’m good.”
Maddon, 65, has said repeatedly that he wants to come back to Chicago, where he managed four consecutive playoff teams, including 2016 World Series champions.
